What's happening?
X (formerly Twitter) recently changed how encrypted DMs are secured. During a short window while X rolled out this change, some encrypted messages were not accepted for delivery on X's side, so the other person never received them.
We've identified every message affected during that window and marked each one with a red "failed to send" icon, so you can see exactly which messages need your attention.
Do I need to do anything?
It depends on the type of message:
Messages you sent manually — these are marked with the red icon in your conversations. For each one, you can Resend it (it will be delivered with X's new encryption, and the old failed copy is removed) or Delete it if it's no longer relevant.
Campaign messages — you don't need to do anything. We've automatically rescheduled every affected campaign message, and they'll go out again for you.
Did I lose any messages?
No. Your messages are still visible in Inbox. The icon simply indicates that the recipient may not have received that specific message.
If the other person already replied in the conversation, there's nothing to worry about — their reply confirms they received your messages.
What does the "failed to send" icon mean?
When you see the failed icon, it means:
The message was sent during the window when X was updating its encryption
The recipient did not receive this specific message
For manual messages, you can resend it to deliver it now, or delete it
Everything you send going forward is delivered normally
Why is this happening now?
X updated the security requirements for encrypted conversations. Messages sent during that rollout window are the only ones affected, which is why you may now see these indicators on a few older messages.
