Why do some of my messages show an undelivered icon?

You may notice a red undelivered icon next to some of your messages. This article explains what it means and what you need to know.

What's happening?

X (formerly Twitter) recently made changes to how encrypted DMs are secured. As part of this update, X now requires stricter verification of encryption keys used in conversations.

Some messages you sent before this change may not have been received by the other user. We now display an undelivered icon next to these messages to let you know. This only affects encrypted messages—if you did not upgrade your account to enable X Chat before Jan 21, 2026 then you are not affected by this.

Do I need to do anything?

No action is required. Any new messages you send are delivered normally with proper encryption. This only affects some older messages sent before the security update.

Did I lose any messages?

Your messages are not lost — they're still visible on Inbox. The indicator simply shows that the recipient may not have seen that particular message on their end.

If the other user already replied to your conversation, there's nothing to worry about. Their response confirms they received your messages.

What does the undelivered icon mean?

When you see the undelivered icon, it means:

- The message was sent during a period when X was transitioning encryption keys

- The recipient may not have received this specific message

- All messages you send going forward are delivered normally

Why is this happening now?

X recently began enforcing stricter security checks on encrypted conversations. Inbox has updated to match these requirements, which is why you may now see indicators on messages that were sent before this change.
