Messages Not Syncing? Try These Fixes

Having trouble seeing your messages sync? Don’t worry—this is a common issue, and most of the time it’s easy to fix. Follow these steps to get your inbox back on track.

Step 1: Check Your Chrome Extension

The Inbox Chrome extension is the engine that keeps your messages in sync. If it’s not working correctly, syncing may fail.

Quick Chrome Extension Checks:

  • Make sure the Inbox Chrome extension is installed from the Chrome Web Store.

  • Verify you’re logged into the correct X account when connecting.

  • Look for the Inbox floating icon on X.com.

    - Missing icon? The extension may need reinstalling.

  • If messages aren’t syncing, try:

    - Clicking the floating icon → selecting your account → clicking Link

    - Disconnecting and reconnecting your X account in Linked Accounts

Step 2: Basic Browser Fixes

Sometimes the simplest fixes work best:

  • Close and reopen your browser completely.

  • Ensure the extension is installed and your account is linked.

  • For large inboxes, remember syncing may take hours, but small inboxes (<100 contacts) sync instantly.

Tip: Syncing happens in the cloud—you don’t need to keep your browser open.

Step 3: XChat PIN Issues

If you’re using XChat (encrypted messaging), you need to enter your XChat PIN for syncing to work. Without it, the system can’t retrieve your conversations.

Step 4: Sync Timing Expectations

  • Small inboxes (<100 contacts): sync instantly

  • Larger inboxes: may take several hours

  • Recent X encryption changes: may affect older messages, but new messages sync normally

Clear IndexedDB (Advanced Fix)

If syncing is still stuck, your browser’s local data may be causing the issue. Clearing IndexedDB gives the extension a fresh start.

When to Try This

  • Messages are stuck syncing

  • Extension is installed and linked, but nothing updates

  • You recently switched X accounts or reinstalled the extension

How to Clear IndexedDB (Chrome)

  1. Open X.com

  2. Right-click → Inspect

  3. Go to the Application tab

  4. In the left menu, open Storage → IndexedDB

  5. Find entries related to Inbox / messaging

  6. Right-click → Delete

  7. Close DevTools and refresh the page

This only clears local browser data—your messages are safe.
